Hello, we are ARDS, the Alfred Resident Doctors' Society . ARDS is a society of volunteer HMOs and Registrars that work to support and engage the junior medical cohort of the Alfred Hospital Network. We work with local businesses, hospital executives and our members in the RMO cohort to create social events, furnish our shared social spaces, advocate for our members and celebrate key calendar events each year. We love what we do and do it to better the working lives of colleagues.

We have three key pillars of action: advocacy and support, education and social celebration. Our RMO representatives continually work with the hospital executive bodies to improve the experience of our colleagues. We act as liaisons and communicators for our RMOs. Monthly meetings allow us to engage with hospital leaders directly, and take issues such as security, rostering and staff quotas directly to the people who make decisions and implement change across the hospital network. We also meet frequently with AMA Victoria, communicating your concerns directly to the chief medical advocacy group in the state.

Education has been a focus of ARDS over the past few years and we have been working hard to build on and expand the opportunities we offer our members and the junior medical staff. This includes a basic sciences revision series,  GSSE tips and tricks sessions, and more recently a special Isolation Tutorials lecture series. We also collaborate with a number of hospital departments such as ED, ICU and surgery, to increase access to specialty specific teaching programs. We are continually working to improve teaching and development for our junior medical staff and can't wait to bring you more education events in the future! 

Thanks to our members’ generous support, we are able to provide food and drink to the entire RMO cohort. Whether it’s Friday night-shift pizza, the food in Ressies or snacks on ‘R U OK’ day and other special events, ARDS has been the group filling your stomachs! We also work with key business partners, garnering donations of equipment, snacks and coffee vouchers to say thank you to our amazing friends and colleagues across Alfred Health. And, each year we have the pleasure of organising several great social events, where we can swap out the scrubs for something fancier and get together to relax and enjoy ourselves. In 2020 our social calendar went on pause, but we are planning some fantastic COVID-safe events for 2021 including our ARDS Annual Ball! 

We work hard to bring our members and friends together for frequent gatherings and we can’t wait to get together again. We can’t emphasise enough how grateful we are to our members. Without their contributions none of this would be possible. So, from the entire ARDS team, THANK YOU. You are amazing doctors, great people, and you make it all possible!
